The Swiss Federal Office of Topography swisstopo now offers a journey through time with Switzerland aerial images from 1979 to the present day. The web application is now available for free online in the map and geodata viewer of the Confederation, map.geo.admin.ch
In 2013, swisstopo launched the “Journey in Time”. Nearly 8,000 maps cover Switzerland and observe its evolution from the early 19th century to the present day.
Swisstopo now completes this trip in the past through its collection of aerial images. By publishing this cultural heritage, the Federal Office pursues its commitments for the conservation, enhancement and availability of its national geodata. Thanks to the treatment of nearly 40,000 aerial photos, it is possible to observe the changing urban environment and changes in the natural environment throughout the country for the periods 1979 to 1985 and 1990 to the present day.
From black-white to color
The images are in black and white until the end of the 90s. The color brings all its reality to the landscape. Shooting technologies have also evolved. Thus the ground precision increases from 50 cm in 1979 to reach 10 cm in 2017. The acquisition of data digitally in 2005 allowed a faster processing of images.
Access to images
The temporal scrolling of aerial images for a place is a new function of the geodata viewer. It allows a fun and informative access to Switzerland from the sky.
